VETERANS PROGRAM
THIS IS NOT A GOVERNMENT SPONSORED PROGRAM, THIS PROGRAM IS SPONSORED BY THE LINWOOD CEMETERY ASSOCIATION. Because you are a veteran you are entitled to ONE FREE TRADITIONAL BURIAL SPACE in LINWOOD CEMETERY’S NEW VETERAN SERENITY GARDEN. (Photo #1 & 2) •Because of lack of burial space available for Veteran’s in the National Cemeteries. •Because there is not a National Cemetery in the metropolitan Dubuque area. •Because of great distances and accompanying transportation costs involved from this area to a National Cemetery, a Veterans Serenity Garden has been developed in Linwood Cemetery exclusively for Veterans and their families. •Any service person killed in action during war time will be buried in the Veteran’s Garden at no cost for the burial site. •As an Honorable Discharged Veteran of the United States Armed Forces, you are entitled to and will be assigned traditional burial property in Linwood’s Veteran Serenity Garden, or in the Cremation Section of the Garden. You must, however, register for this. •The only cost to the Veteran is the amount required by State Law for Perpetual Care. •Verification of Veteran Serial Number and Discharge is required. •Special Protective features are available for spouse and all minor children. •A certificate of entitlement for your burial property will be furnished to you as soon as information is verified and space had been selected. •There are limited number of spaces available and these will be assigned on a first come-first serve basis while space exists. •All Memorialization in the Garden will be either of granite or bronze on granite. (Photo 3 and Vet-3-V1 from brochure and Vet-2-V1L V1-R from brochure) •Provisions have been made for Veteran’s in the newly constructed Mausoleum. •Provisions have been made for Cremation of Veteran’s in the columbarium. PLANNING NOW FOR THE FUTURE Leave your family with the burden of your funeral arrangements and you may be leaving them hurt, confused and overwhelmed. VETERAN BENEFITS •5’ X 8’ AMERICAN FLAG Why does VA Provide a Burial Flag? A Unites States Flag is provided, at no cost, to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is furnished to honor the memory of the veteran’s military service to his or her country. Who is eligible to receive the Burial Flag? Generally, the flag is given to the next-of-kin, as a keepsake after use during the funeral service. When there is no next-of-kin the flag is furnished to a friend making request for it. Can a Burial Flag be replaced? The law allows the VA to issue one flag for a veteran’s funeral and not replace it if it is lost, destroyed, or stolen. How can the Burial Flag be displayed? In memory of all veterans buried in Linwood Cemetery we have established an Avenue of Flags which began in 1978 with 25 flags. Today, there are more than 700 flags flying in the Avenue of Flags. The Avenue of Flags consists of standard 5’ x 8’ veterans’ flags being flown on 20 foot flagpoles, with the veterans name, branch of service and war served in on a tag attached to his or her flag pole. The flags line the roadway of Linwood Cemetery beginning at the entrance gateway and extending up the main roadways. During Memorial Day weekend, the Avenue of flags will fly as a special salute to our loved ones who gave their lives for our country. If you wish to have a flag fly in memory of your loved one, you can either donate the flag you received from the Veterans Administration and purchase a flagpole, or purchase a flag from Linwood along with a flagpole. Throughout time, as your flag becomes worn, you will be contacted to purchase a replacement flag. •HEADSTONE/MARKERS What does the VA provide? A government-provided grave marker is available from the VA to mark the unmarked grave of an eligible veteran. Application for the military marker is completed at the funeral home at time of death. You may select from a 24 x 12 granite or 24 x 12 bronze memorial. (Photo 3 and Vet-3-V1 from brochure and Vet-2-V1L V1-R from brochure) **Additional benefits may apply.
